The five pillars of Islam
Islam is built on five pillars.
The five pillars of Islam
The Prophet ﷺ described Islam as built on five foundations (Bukhari, Muslim). They are the pillars of a Muslim's life.
1. The shahada
"Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh." Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
2. Prayer (salah)
Praying five times a day: dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset and night. Obligatory for every sane Muslim who has reached puberty.
3. Fasting
In Ramadan, refraining from food, drink and marital relations from dawn until sunset. The sick and travellers may make it up later.
4. Zakat
One who owns, beyond basic needs and debts, wealth reaching the nisab (the value of about 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver) for a full lunar year gives one fortieth (2.5%) of it to those in need.
5. Hajj
Once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is able: visiting the Kaaba in the Hajj season, standing at Arafat and fulfilling the other rites of Hajj.
