Salat al-Istikhara: how to pray it

Istikhara means asking Allah to choose what is good for you. The Prophet ﷺ taught it to his Companions "as he taught them a surah of the Qur'an", for every matter (Bukhari).

How to pray

  1. Make wudu and pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer, at a time when prayer is not disliked.
  2. After the salam, praise Allah, send Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, and recite the Istikhara dua (Istikhara Dua).
  3. Where the dua says "hadhal-amr" (this matter), name or think of your decision.
  4. Then go ahead with what you feel at ease with, trusting that Allah will make the good easy.

What to expect

There is no requirement to see a dream. The answer is often that one path becomes easier and the other is blocked. You may repeat Istikhara, and it is good to also consult people you trust: "Whoever seeks Allah's guidance and consults others will not regret" is a well-known saying of the scholars.
