Stories of the Qur'an

The Prophet Yusuf

The story of the Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), from the well to the palace, told from Surah Yusuf.

  1. A dream

Young Yusuf dreamt that eleven stars, the sun and the moon bowed to him. His father Yaqub told him not to tell his brothers (12:4-5). The Qur'an calls it "the best of stories".

  2. The well

His jealous brothers threw him into a well and brought their father a bloodied shirt, saying "A wolf ate him." Yaqub said: "Beautiful patience is mine" (12:8-18).

  3. A slave in Egypt

A caravan took him out and sold him to a nobleman of Egypt. He grew up there with fine character and chastity, refusing an evil invitation with "I seek refuge in Allah" (12:19-29).

  4. Years in prison

Unjustly imprisoned, he still called people to tawhid and interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners. His patience lasted years (12:33-42).

  5. The king's dream

The king saw seven lean cows eat seven fat ones. Yusuf interpreted it as seven years of plenty and seven of famine, asked first that his innocence be shown, and was then entrusted with the storehouses of the land (12:43-56).

  6. Meeting his brothers

In the famine his brothers came for provisions. At last he made himself known and said: "No blame upon you today; may Allah forgive you" (12:58-92).

  7. The dream fulfilled

When his shirt was laid on his father's face, his sight returned. His family came to Egypt and bowed in respect: the childhood dream came true. Yusuf prayed, "My Lord, take my soul as a Muslim" (12:93-101).

  8. Lessons

Beautiful patience, chastity, forgiving despite injustice and trust in Allah's plan. The road from the well to the palace is walked with patience.
